April 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Self Care

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy April! Inspired by that feeling of spring renewal in the air, this month’s theme at the studio is “Self Care.” As you remain committed to your practice, you’ll find that yoga, when you approach it in a particular way, is one of the best forms of self care out there. When we practice yoga we become aware of what we need on a daily basis, physically, mentally, and emotionally. With that awareness, we can implement the tools of yoga that will help serve our highest needs. Some days we need to be still, some days we need to MOVE. Some days we need solitude, some days we need community. Some days we practice yoga on the mat, and some days life requires us to take what we’ve learned off the mat. This is not to say we should have a scattered approach to our practice. Yoga, after all, is a discipline. However the fruits of our disciplined practice include the ability to deploy the skills and tools that yoga teaches us at the right time so that from all of this awareness we’re practicing, we feel we’re able to care for ourselves. How empowering!

See you on the mat!

Namaste,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Parivrtta Parsvakonasana: Revolved Side Angle Pose

This month at the studio we breakdown
Parivrtta Parsvakonasana: Revolved Side Angle Pose.

Sutra of the Month

This sutra is discussing the state of consciousness that is achieved through the practice of yoga. It suggests that through the practice, the individual is able to move beyond the distractions and fluctuations of the mind, and come to rest in their true, unchanging nature. This true nature is often described as pure consciousness, free from the limitations and distortions of the ego and the material world.

Ayurvedic Half Day Retreat

12:00-4:00pm

with Nancy Rich

Journey into the world of Ayurveda with Nancy Rich, ERYT-500 & Ayurvedic Health Counselor, graduate of the California College of Ayurveda, on a blissful, kapha pacifying half-day retreat. Through education, as well as being guided through an uplifting afternoon of yoga, pranayama (breath practice), Yoga Nidra, nourishing food, & treats.

Ayurveda is a complete medical science that is derived from the same teachings as yoga & aimed at healing imbalances with the body & mind.

As the wheel of the year spins & we gaze, in anticipation, towards the promising light of spring’s splendor it is a perfect time to reaffirm our commitment to our own healing, remembering the light of our own true nature. However, we may not be experiencing our innate lightheartedness. Generally speaking, during this time of the year, especially in the northeast, we may feel symptoms of kapha dosha being out of balance; lethargy, melancholy, lack of motivation, weight gain, digestive issues, as well as respiratory issues. As we shift the way we practice yoga to pacify kapha dosha our practice becomes powerful medicine to energize, brighten & balance us, holistically.

Please dress in cozy layers & bring along your yoga mat, pillow, journal.

March 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Manifestation

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy March! As we turn the corner from Winter into Spring, what do you want to cultivate in your life? Something specific? Or a general feeling or emotion? Can we use the teachings of yoga to help us be better manifesters? Bringing about positive changes in our life is not easy, but much of it has to do with stripping AWAY illusions, blocks & staleness. Letting go of something often creates more space for something better to make its way in. Can we learn from Patanjali’s outlining of Prakriti (illusion) & Purusha (reality)? Join us in the studio to go deeper.

Namaste,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Adho Mukha Vrksasana: Handstand Pose

This month we breakdown Adho Mukha Vrksasana, or Handstand Pose. Click to watch the video!

Sutra of the Month

The gunas are the building blocks to reality. The gunas exist in three forms: sattva (balance), rajas (activity), and tamas (inertia). Patanjali says that all things align with the gunas. The essence of each object has a mixture of movement, immobility, and rest, and this recipe can change over time.

Samadhi is a state of deep absorption and union with the object of meditation, in which the meditator experiences a sense of oneness and transcendence. One of the benefits of achieving samadhi is that the meditator gains the power to manifest their intentions instantly. This is because in the state of samadhi, the mind is completely focused and free from distractions, allowing the meditator to access the full potential of their consciousness. However, it's important to note that this sutra is not suggesting that we should only meditate in order to gain power or achieve our goals. Rather, it's a reminder that the practice of meditation can have profound effects on our lives, including the ability to achieve our goals and desires with greater ease and efficiency.

The concept of "dukkha" in Buddhism and "duhkha" in Hinduism, which is often translated as "suffering" or "unsatisfactoriness". It suggests that those who are able to discriminate and see clearly will recognize that everything in life is inherently painful or unsatisfying. This may sound like a pessimistic view, but it's actually meant to be a call to action. Our attachment to pleasure or avoidance of pain can actually lead to more suffering, and that cultivating a sense of detachment or non-attachment can help us find greater equanimity.

Oil of the Month

Our March OOTM is:

Blues Buster

“The effect of scent on our moods has been well-documented scientifically. The smell of something familiar or comforting often results in an improved mood. Our Blues Buster Essential Oil Blend is formulated with bright, cheerful Tangerine, Pink Grapefruit, and soothing Bourbon Geranium to increase your sense of emotional well-being. Blues Busters is excellent for diffusion or a personal aromatherapy inhaler. It can also make a great addition to body care or massage products when diluted in a carrier oil to 4%.” -Plant Therapy

Focus

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy February! After the resolutions start to fade away, now we can really settle into 2023, and FOCUS. This time of year, in the thick of winter, is a wonderful time for more contemplative practices, like meditation. Yoga can really help us feel more focused. Each time you arrive on your mat, and bring your whole attention into the present moment, you become more skilful at focusing. As you become more skillful, you can distinguish what needs to stay in your mind, and what can be set aside. This is the foundation of meditation - we’ll try to move into more meditative states on our mat this month.

Namaste,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Astavakrasana: Eight Angle Pose

This month we breakdown Astavakrasana, or Eight Angle Pose. Click to watch the video!

Sutra of the Month

In these series of sutras, Patanjali explains how best to steady the mind. Finding this state of consciousness can happen when we are engrossed with an object of interest by showing dedication and devotion. Practicing yoga does not solve our problems, but it can calm the mind enough to focus on a solution. Our thoughts move in our mind like waves and our consciousness is the ocean. When we learn to still and silence the thoughts, we are better able to focus. Learning from teachers who are free from desires and attachments, we can we understand ways to bring our consciousness, or citta, to a state of desirelessness. By doing so, we can make our minds pure. Citta has four levels: the unconscious (dreamless sleep: nidra), the subconscious (dream-filled: svapna), the conscious (waking: jagrata) and the superconscious (individual soul merged with Universal Soul: turya). The transitions between these states are sacred portals full of wisdom. We are invited to meditate on the knowledge that arises from dreams and deep sleep and attune to the subtler states of our consciousness. In our practice of yoga we’re always working to move toward clarity and away from confusion. Toward releasing and away from grasping. Toward ease and away from fear. But it isn’t easy. And the path isn’t without its complications.

January 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Life Force

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who stuck with me over the past 3 years in Glen Cove. It’s been an emotional few weeks letting go of that studio, and passing the torch to someone new. I can’t say enough how much I appreciate your words of support and kindness, your patience and flexibility as I close the door on that chapter of my life. Thank you.

As I open a new door in my own life, and turn the page on 2022, I get those hopeful new year feelings, and can’t help bringing them into my practice, and teaching. “Where attention goes, energy flows.” This month, our theme is “Life Force!” This new year, let's collectively channel our energy toward the things we most want to cultivate in our lives. I don’t want to use the “r” word, but I invite you to set your 2023 intention in the form of a single word or phrase you can carry with you - write it down! I’m still sorting mine out, so don’t worry if it doesn’t pop up right away for you either, give it a little time. Your yoga practice can help you do this. By learning to channel our energy/prana/life force on the mat, we become better vessels for manifesting good things in our lives off the mat.

Cheers to a happy, healthy, hopeful 2023!

Namaste,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Camatkarasana: Wild Thing Pose

This month we breakdown Camatkarasana, or Wild Thing Pose. Click to watch the video!

Sutra of the Month

Behind any accomplishment there is always a force—desire. The strength of your desire determines how easily you will attain your goal. It determines how easy it will be to overcome obstacles when they arise and indicates what kind of person you are. Knowing your tendencies and having a clear goal can help you find the level of intensity that will make the process enjoyable and sustainable. Patanjali states that there are various levels of determination within one’s own practice. Every day on our mat is different, some days we want a strong practice, other days, we look for rest and recovery. No matter where we are, we are all headed in the right direction. Steady consistency is what is most important, not the intensity of which you practice.

Oil of the Month

Our January OOTM is:

Bergamot Mint

“Uplift your spirits with the refreshing scents of Bergamot Mint Essential Oil. When you smell Bergamot Mint, it resembles a mixture of fresh citrus, floral lavender, and refreshing mint. There are many benefits of Bergamot Mint. Most notably, it is used to help calm and relax the senses while also helping boost motivation and inspiration in your daily life. Even though it is a calming oil, it is not as sedating as others, making it a good choice to use throughout the day when you need to stay productive. In addition, you can use Bergamot Mint Essential Oil to help clear congestion, support an overall healthy immune system and even ease digestive upset.” -Plant Therapy

Let’s use the first weeks of 2023 to form a meditation practice that will serve us throughout the entire year.

What does it feel like inside your mind right now? Do your thoughts run wild throughout your day? Do you feel like you don’t have any control over what happens inside your mind?

Meditation can absolutely help us clear our minds more efficiently, but it can also help us cope with, and even reframe any distressing, pervasive thinking.

Do you feel like you CAN’T meditate? Well, let me ask you this: Can you think of any time in your life when you felt completely absorbed in a task? (your work? your studies? your yard work?) Perhaps it was something enjoyable, or something repetitive (folding laundry? going for a run?). And when you were absorbed in this tasks, do you remember having a feeling of forgetting everything else? A sense of time moving more quickly? It feels really good when we stumble upon these moments of meditation in our everyday lives, right? Those moments of being completely absorbed ARE a state of meditation. We all CAN do it. However, when we sit down to TRY to meditate, oftentimes our mind picks back up its incessant chatter.

We know we WANT to get into a state of meditation, and we WANT to have that feeling of timelessness, but anything worth doing takes practice. Through this program we’ll create the routine, and train our brains to find stillness (just like you train your abs at the gym). There’s also power in togetherness. So, let’s let’s do this together, and support each other in our commitment to cultivating more peace and ease in our inner worlds. What could be more important than that?

What to expect

Week 1:

Find Your Rhythm

Learn to guide yourself into a state of meditation through simple cues you can easily learn and repeat each time you sit down to meditate.

Week 2:

Refine Your Intention

Now that you’ve found your rhythm, and feel more comfortable entering a state of meditation, you can begin to clarify and refine your intention for meditating. How we approach our meditation will impact what we receive from the practice.

Week 3:

Discover Your Center

Now that you’ve learned how to enter a state of meditation, and you’ve settled into your intention, learn to center, and re-center as you lengthen sitting time, and cultivate stillness and inner-peace.

Register for the Challenge

Each week includes 6 pre-recorded meditations you can practice at your own pace. Choose a time that works best for you. The 7th meditation each week will be “live” with Amy on a Zoom call at 7am. You can join in live, or you can watch the recording of the live meditation practice anytime.

No experience required. No special equipment required. Listen in from any device.

$79 to join the challenge

Yin yoga can provide an antidote for this.

The Vagus Nerve

Sunday, January 29th

10:30am-11:30am

with Emily Loeb

The vagus is the tenth cranial nerve. It is long and complex, traveling from the brain all the way down to the colon, along the way relaying messages between the brain, respiratory, digestive and nervous system. Since our breathing, digestion and heart rate are all connected to the vagus nerve, this neural pathway can help the body and mind find homeostasis through a variety of practices. These include many yoga postures, conscious breathing and mindfulness exercises that stimulate the vagus nerve.

This class will introduce a variety of breathing techniques and yoga poses that activate the vagus nerve and increase our overall sense of well-being. These practices help us come into the "rest and digest" part of our nervous system, known as the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps decrease anxiety, stress and inflammation. We will integrate these breathing techniques into our asana practice, discovering how combining these practices can elevate our feelings of comfort and safety. You will leave feeling restored and refreshed, with new tools to help manage stress and anxiety both on and off the mat.

Rest

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy December! Go EASY on yourself. I hope you can continue to take some time out of your busy holiday/end-of-year schedule for a little bit of rest, it’s our theme of the month! As an added incentive, this month in my classes we’ll be taking extended savasana. Don’t worry, if savasana is the hardest posture for you, I’ll be guiding you through some relaxation techniques so your busy mind has something non-stressful to chew on.

Consider what you might need to receive from your practice this time of year. It’s ok to let your practice grow, or slow, or change WITH you. That’s what will help sustain us, and keep us coming back. Take some time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished this year on your mat - thank yourself for each and every conscious breath! And, if the people you love the most in this world are annoying you through the holidays - leave your house, skip down to the studio for an hour, and come back to your breath. Nothing makes me happier than to see you get your break for the day within our 4 walls. Thanks for filling our space with your smiling face these past 12 months. Cheers to a happy, healthy 2023!

See you on the mat!

Amy

Pose of the Month

Salamba Savasana: Supported Corpse Pose

This month we breakdown Salamba Savasana, or Supported Corpse Pose. Click to watch the video!

Sutra of the Month

Naturally we make mistakes, but when, through want of understanding, we fail to reappraise or reflect, error becomes habit. As the processes of thought and action have existed from the beginning of civilization, so has trial and error been used in the search for knowledge. The discriminative power of intelligence comes to an end and pure wisdom alone remains, in which perception and action are simultaneous. Objective and subjective knowledge become one. This is the highest knowledge.

Oil of the Month

Our December OOTM is:

Peppermint

“Originating in India, Peppermint has been used for centuries for its revitalizing properties. Steam distilled from the leaves of the mint plant, Peppermint Essential Oil creates a strongly aromatic scent that has a fresh, cool, grassy-minty smell. This scent is invigorating to the senses and helps promote energy and alertness. Peppermint is a refreshing and stimulating oil that is both soothing and enlightening.

Peppermint Essential Oil has a cooling effect on the skin that is revitalizing and wonderful to the touch, due to its menthol content. With many amazing uses for this essential oil, Peppermint is a valuable addition to any oil collection.

Peppermint can be diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the temples and back of the neck when having head and neck tension. Add, well-diluted, to a carrier oil for an uplifting massage. It is also helpful to sniff when having a queasy stomach. Also useful at the end of a long day as a foot-soak, add a few drops to ½ cup of Epsom salt dissolved in warm water.” -Plant Therapy

10:30-11:45am

with Sydney Matuszak

at Oyster Bay Yoga

This time of year can invoke different feelings in all of us, from being stressed and tense from the holiday season to feeling joyous in welcoming a new year. Sometimes setting resolutions for the full year can be daunting.

Instead, let's take it one month at a time.

Practice will start out with some breathwork to dial into the present moment. Then we'll move into a grounding, balance-focused flow for 1 hour to find our footing for perhaps our first practice of the new year.

After practice, we'll have time to journal and reflect on our upcoming January to set practical goals! If that's not your thing, you're welcome to stay in savasana longer or take a seated meditation for the duration.

Hope to see you there.

Gratitude

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy November! Fun fact: I read a lot of personal development books. And you can’t be into personal development without reading some Tony Robbins. Whenever I think about gratitude, as a practice, I think about Tony’s quote that “you can’t be grateful and angry at the same time, and you can’t be grateful and afraid at the same time.” He’s a big proponent of morning routine, and I know from reading his books that his morning routine always includes a gratitude practice. Now, we all have a yoga practice, or a meditation practice of some kind, or we wouldn’t be reading this! So, this month I’ll encourage us all to tie a gratitude practice into our yoga practice, because ‘tis the season! Let’s see if we can up the amount of time we spend in the feeling of gratitude, and what that can shift in our lives.

See you on the mat!

Amy

Pose of the Month

Urdhva Mukha Shvanasana: Upward Facing Dog

This month we breakdown Urdhva Mukha Shvanasana: Upward Facing Dog. Click to watch the video!

Sutra of the Month

When we choose to focus our attention on abundance, and our sense of enough comes from within, our vision is filled with all that we have. Instead of seeing lack, we see bounty. What if, instead of moving through the world focused on what we can get, we constantly asked ourselves what we can give?

Oil of the Month

Our November OOTM is:

Autumn Blooms

“Breathe in the lightly floral and fresh, earthy aroma of a fall garden with our Autumn Blooms Essential Oil Blend. This cooling, herbaceous blend will lighten your senses with its bouquet of sweet flowers, green herbs, and woody notes. Let the sweetness of Orange, Davana, Blue Tansy, and Chamomile oils uplift your senses while it freshens the air around you. Coriander, Cardamom, and Carrot Seed Oils provide a touch of spiciness against the deeper, earthier notes of Cedarwood, Turmeric, and Carnation oils. Enjoy the changing of the seasons with this unique bouquet of complementary scents.” -Plant Therapy
