October 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

The Subtle Body

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy October! This month, let’s let our practice be a reflection of the season. Moving into the fall, and into Vata season, we’re offering some options to slow down, to ground, and to settle into a new way of practicing that nourishes our bodies and minds this time of year. Join us for Yin with Barbara on 10/8 & the Full Moon Gong Bath on 10/27. Save your spot in Nancy’s Ayurvedic Retreat on 11/5, and check out our new weekly 7:15pm Tuesday class with Peggy - it’s Gentle & Restorative - starting this Tuesday night 10/3!

See you on the mat,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Utthan Pristhasana: Lizard Pose

This month at the studio we breakdown
Utthan Pristhasana: Lizard Pose.
Learn how best to practice this pose in any class all month long!

Sutra of the Month

In this sutra, Patanjali suggests that by using the breath, we are able to purify the mind. In particular, the pranayama, or breathing technique, that focuses on the exhalation. By practicing pranayama, we can channel our prana, or lifeforce/energy, for spiritual growth.

Oil of the Month

Our October OOTM is:

Ginger Root

“An excellent multi-tasker when it comes to overall well-being, Ginger Essential Oil offers a wide variety of support. Its affinity for the digestive system allows it to naturally tackle stomach concerns, such as bloating, cramps, nausea, and gas. It can also settle upset due to traveling, motion sickness, and overeating. Simply inhale the aroma when uncomfortable symptoms arise or dilute in your favorite carrier oil and gently massage Ginger onto the abdomen. When used topically, Ginger can also increase circulation, helping to warm cold, stiff joints and relax overworked or tired muscles. Emotionally, Ginger encourages a sense of confidence and motivation by helping to sharpen a foggy mind and lift feelings of lethargy.” -Plant Therapy

Enjoy 20% off your purchase of Ginger Root essential oil all month at the studio.

Yin Yoga

Are you moving too fast?
Doing too many things at one time?
Too much "mind chatter" or just want to slow down?
Yin yoga can provide an antidote for this.

This class will guide you through a series of poses that are primarily done sitting and lying down. The poses are held for 2-5 minutes at a time to allow connective tissues (fascia, ligaments) to soften, lengthen and lubricate. A yin yoga practice compliments a yang practice and allows for a more balanced approach to life.

Touch the Ground: Ayurvedic Half Day Retreat

Sunday, November 5th
12:00-4:00pm
with Nancy Rich

Journey into the world of Ayurveda and learn how to heal and stayed balanced this season through our five senses with Nancy Rich, ERYT-500, Ayurvedic Health Counselor, Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist and graduate of The California College of Ayurveda. Delight in a blissful, half day retreat filled with Ayurvedic education, including: seasonal diet and herbs, aromatherapy, chromotherapy and other sense therapy practices.  Enjoy a grounding afternoon of slow yoga, pranayama (breath practice), yoga nidra, nourishing lunch and treats to take home.

As the heat of the summer dwindles and the chill of autumn sets in, the leaves dry and fall from the trees as we welcome the onset of the Ayurvedic season of Vata. Ayurveda is a complete medical science that is derived from the same teachings as yoga and aimed at healing imbalances with the body and mind. The qualities of Vata season are much like those of autumn and early winter -cold, dry, rough, windy and  erratic, as they are both governed by the elements air and space. The aggravating dry and cold qualities of the season often lead to imbalances such as skin issues, constipation, arthritis, insomnia, mood swings, anxiety and excess mental chatter, preventing us from fully enjoying the beauty of the season.

Simple changes in our seasonal routine can make all the difference in grounding and balancing in the fall and winter months.

Please dress in cozy layers and bring a yoga mat, pillow and journal.

Early Bird Pricing: $135 (ends 10/1)
