Align

Dear Yogis,

As I sit down to write this, the trees outside are finally bursting with green, the breeze is soft and warm, and everything feels like it’s settling into place—slowly, steadily, and sweetly. There’s something about this time of year that invites us to look around and within, to notice what feels in sync... and what might be asking for a gentle shift.

The theme I’ve chosen for this month is Align. Not just alignment in the physical body (though yes, let’s talk about those joints and how they’re stacking!), but alignment in a deeper sense—of energy, intention, values, and rhythm. Where are you living in alignment? Where might you be out of step with your own truth? These are the questions I’m sitting with lately, both on and off the mat.

I hope this month brings you clarity, strength, and just the right amount of springtime boldness.

All the best,
Amy

Sutra of the Month

Sutra 1.14 reminds us that true transformation in yoga, or in anything meaningful, doesn’t come from quick fixes or occasional effort. Instead, it’s the steady, patient, and heartfelt repetition of practice that lays a strong foundation. Like planting a seed and tending to it daily, our practice needs time, consistency, and care to take root and grow. Even when we don’t see or feel immediate results, showing up with sincerity day after day is what creates stability and real depth. This sutra encourages us to commit with our whole hearts in every aspect of life.

Oil of the Month

Our May OOTM is:

Eucalyptus Oil

“A true powerhouse essential oil, there is a reason why it’s widely known in the aromatherapy world. To help ease congestion, colds, or any other common illnesses, Organic Eucalyptus Globulus is notably known for promoting great respiratory health. Also, when used in a massage or with other topical blends, this essential oil can help aid in muscle aches and pains caused by strenuous exercising or normal changes due to aging. If you are looking for something to help stimulate the mind and bring more mental focus into your life, Organic Eucalyptus Globulus is a great essential oil to do so. Get ready to take in its herbaceous scent, accompanied by its soft, woody undertones.”

Self Care

Dear Yogis,

Happy April! This month, take a moment to ask yourself, “How can I truly care for myself?” Imagine seeing yourself through the eyes of a dear friend—someone who loves you unconditionally. What would they wish for you?

Self-care isn’t just about rest; it’s about showing up for yourself with kindness and intention. This season, let your yoga practice be an act of self-care—time set aside just for you. As you step onto your mat, listen to what your body and heart need. Each breath, each movement, is a gift of renewal. The more you embrace yoga as self-care, the more nourishing and fulfilling your practice will become.

Give yourself that gift. You deserve it.

All the best,
Amy

Sutra of the Month

This sutra reminds us of the heart of yoga: when the mind becomes still and free from distractions, we return to our true essence. In our daily lives, our thoughts, emotions, and external influences often cloud our perception of who we truly are. But through yoga and meditation, we learn to quiet the fluctuations of the mind (as mentioned in Sutra 1.2) and reconnect with our inner self—calm, clear, and unshaken. Each time you step onto your mat, consider it an opportunity to move beyond the noise and settle into your true nature.

March 2025 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Manifestation

Dear Yogis,

Happy March! As we transition from winter’s stillness to the renewal of spring, take a moment to reflect—what are you hoping to bring into your life? A specific intention, or simply a greater sense of balance and clarity? According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras 4.13-4.14, everything in our world exists in different states of change, shaped by perception and energy. What if transformation isn’t about forcing something new, but about seeing through illusion, shedding what no longer serves you, and making space for what is already waiting to emerge? Join us in the studio as we explore these timeless teachings and step into spring with fresh awareness.

All the best,
Amy

Garudasana: Eagle Pose.

Sutra of the Month

Yoga Sutra 4.13-4.14 explores the nature of reality and the ever-changing forms of existence. Sutra 4.13 explains that all objects—both tangible and intangible—exist in potential, active, or subtle states, influenced by the three gunas (sattva, rajas, and tamas). This highlights that everything we perceive is a manifestation of these fundamental energies. Sutra 4.14 states that an object’s essence remains unchanged, but its appearance and experience shift based on the observer’s perception and the interplay of the gunas. Together, these sutras remind us that while the external world is constantly in flux, the deeper essence of things—and of ourselves—remains steady. Understanding this allows us to cultivate a sense of detachment and clarity, recognizing that our experiences are shaped by perception rather than absolute truth.

Oil of the Month

Our March OOTM is:

Sweet Orange Oil

“One of the brightest citrus oils of the bunch, Organic Sweet Orange is a great essential oil that holds even greater benefits. Its refreshing, juicy aroma can help cheer up any environment and boast any stale-smelling room. It can help ease nervous tension, uplift feelings of sadness and can also support normal functioning of your immune system. Dilute Organic Sweet Orange into a carrier oil and apply it to your skin to help brighten and reduce dullness.” -Plant Therapy

Connection

Dear Yogis,

Happy February! Take a moment to pause and place your hand over your heart. Feel the rhythm of connection—the connection to yourself, to those around you, and to the world beyond. Each inhale is an opportunity to draw in love and compassion; each exhale is a chance to release barriers that keep you feeling stuck. Can you carry this awareness into your daily life? This month, let’s celebrate the ties that unite us, whether it’s connecting with your breath, your community, or the present moment. You’re creating space for something beautiful to bloom, so keep tending to your roots with love and care.

All the best,
Amy

It advises adopting four attitudes: friendliness toward those who are happy, compassion for those who are suffering, joy for the virtuous, and equanimity toward those who behave in harmful or troubling ways. By embracing these qualities, we train the mind to stay calm and balanced, even in challenging situations. This sutra reminds us that our inner peace is deeply influenced by our responses to others and encourages us to approach life with an open heart and a steady mind. It’s a timeless teaching on how to maintain harmony within while fostering connection and understanding in the world around us.

Yin yoga can provide an antidote for this.

This class will guide you through a series of poses that are primarily done sitting and lying down. The poses are held for 2-5 minutes at a time to allow connective tissues (fascia, ligaments) to soften, lengthen and lubricate. January 2025 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Discipline

Dear Yogis,

Happy 2025! Thanks so much for continuing to practice with us and support the studio. Can you believe we’ll be finishing our 9th year of operation this June? Although this past year has taken me away from the day-to-day with all of you, please know you’re in my daily thoughts and always in my heart! I miss seeing you on the mat, but each time I drop into the studio I can feel the positive energy you pour into your practice and this community of special, spectacular students and instructors.

January is a time of new beginnings, making it the perfect month to explore discipline. Discipline isn’t about harsh rules or perfection—it’s about showing up with intention, even when motivation fades. In yoga, discipline is considered a key practice for inner transformation, encouraging us to commit to what nurtures our well-being. Whether it’s rolling out your mat, prioritizing mindful habits, or embracing personal growth, discipline helps us align our actions with our highest goals. As the new year unfolds, consider how small, consistent efforts can spark meaningful change in your life.

All the best,
Amy

Pose of the Month

Makara Adho Mukha Svanasana: Dolphin Pose

This month at the studio we breakdown
Makara Adho Mukha Svanasana: Dolphin Pose.

Sutra of the Month

In Yoga Sutra 1.21, Patanjali emphasizes the power of dedication and sincere effort in one’s spiritual journey. Progress in yoga accelerates when a practitioner approaches their practice with deep commitment and a burning desire for transformation. The stronger the intention and focus, the sooner spiritual realization can be attained. This sutra highlights that success is not dependent on external circumstances but on the practitioner’s inner drive and devotion.

Expanding on this, Sutra 1.22, acknowledges that while all sincere efforts yield results, the speed and depth of progress depend on the intensity of practice. Patanjali identifies three levels of effort: mṛdu (mild), madhya (moderate), and adhimātra (intense). Those with mild commitment may progress slowly, while moderate practitioners experience steadier advancement. Those practicing with intense dedication and unwavering focus achieve the most profound results.

Together, these sutras remind us that spiritual growth is directly influenced by our level of commitment and the consistency of our practice.

Oil of the Month

Our January OOTM is:

Peppermint Oil

“Nothing says fresh quite like Peppermint. Its minty, cooling aroma holds stimulating benefits that can help enhance alertness and stamina. Whenever you’re feeling sluggish, reach for Peppermint for a midday boost of energy. Due to its menthol properties, it can induce a cooling sensation when applied to the skin. When experiencing head or neck tension, dilute Peppermint to a carrier oil for a soothing massage. When you’re feeling nauseous or need support for respiratory health, it can be helpful to take in its scent through a personal inhaler.” -Plant Therapy

Enjoy 20% off your purchase of Peppermint essential oil all month at the studio.

Rest

Dear Yogis,

Happy December! Go EASY on yourself. I hope you can continue to take some time out of your busy holiday/end-of-year schedule for a little bit of rest, it’s our theme of the month! As an added incentive, this month in my classes we’ll be taking extended savasana. Don’t worry, if savasana is the hardest posture for you, We’ll be guiding you through some relaxation techniques so your busy mind has something non-stressful to chew on.

Consider what you might need to receive from your practice this time of year. It’s ok to let your practice grow, or slow, or change WITH you. That’s what will help sustain us, and keep us coming back. Take some time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished this year on your mat - thank yourself for each and every conscious breath! And, if the people you love the most in this world are annoying you through the holidays - leave your house, skip down to the studio for an hour, and come back to your breath. Nothing makes me happier than to see you get your break for the day within our 4 walls. Thanks for filling our space with your smiling face these past 12 months. Cheers to a happy, healthy 2025!

All the best,
Amy

Sutra of the Month

Sutra 2.5 from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali explains that ignorance (avidya) is the root cause of all suffering. It arises when we mistake the impermanent for the permanent, the impure for the pure, the painful for the pleasurable, and the non-self for the true self.

In essence, avidya clouds our perception, keeping us disconnected from our true nature. Through consistent yoga practice, self-awareness, and mindfulness, we can dispel ignorance, revealing clarity, truth, and inner peace.

Oil of the Month

Douglas Fir Oil

“Like taking a brisk stroll through a beautiful pine forest, Douglas Fir Essential Oil emits a strong, sweet, clean, piney-fresh scent with citrusy notes. This oil can be stimulating to the senses yet comforting, and diffusing this lovely oil gives you the refreshing scent reminiscent of a wintery forest day. When experiencing feelings of sadness, Douglas Fir can help uplift such emotions. Also great for clear respiration, Douglas Fir also helps promote healthy breathing.” -Plant Therapy
