July 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Tapas

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy July! Embrace the energy of the season by cultivating some tapas in your practice; one of Patanjali’s Niyamas, or “observances.” The dedicated yogi can practice tapas, which means discipline, austerity or “burning enthusiasm.” Take your passion for your yoga practice, and let it help you burn away physical and mental blocks on your path to uniting with your spiritual highest self!

Be well!

Namaste,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Vasisthasana: Side Plank

This month at the studio we breakdown
Vasisthasana: Side Plank.
Learn how best to practice this pose in any class all month long!

Sutra of the Month

Sutra 2.1 by Patanjali introduces three essential components of the yogic path: self-discipline (tapah), self-study (svadhyaya), and devotion to a higher power (ishvara pranidhana). Tapah emphasizes the importance of self-discipline in cultivating inner strength and overcoming obstacles. Svadhyaya encourages self-reflection and deep introspection to gain insight into one's thoughts, actions, and patterns. Ishvara pranidhana involves surrendering to a higher power, letting go of ego-driven desires, and cultivating trust and devotion. These three elements are fundamental to the yogic journey, fostering personal growth, self-awareness, and a deeper connection with the divine.

Oil of the Month

Our July OOTM is:

Eucalyptus

“A true powerhouse essential oil, there is a reason why it’s widely known in the aromatherapy world. To help ease congestion, colds, or any other common illnesses, Eucalyptus Globulus is notably known for promoting great respiratory health. Also, when used in a massage or with other topical blends, this essential oil can help aid in muscle aches and pains caused by strenuous exercising or normal changes due to aging. If you are looking for something to help stimulate the mind and bring more mental focus into your life, Eucalyptus Globulus is a great essential oil to do so. Get ready to take in its herbaceous scent, accompanied by its soft, woody undertones.” -Plant Therapy

Enjoy 20% off your purchase of Eucalyptus essential oil all month at the studio.

Sunday, July 16th

12:00-4:00pm

with Nancy Rich

As the wheel of the years spins on the days get longer, the air gets warmer and we look forward to welcoming summer’s fresh energy. The summer heat is enjoyable when we are healthy and balanced, but with this season comes the potential for imbalances. Ayurveda likens the qualities of summer to Pitta Dosha, which is comprised of mostly of fire. During this time of year we may run the risk of Pitta Dosha running high, leading to symptoms of Pitta Dosha imbalances, especially if we aren’t living a lifestyle conducive to the change of seasons. Excess heat can lead to a less pleasurable summer with imbalances such as burning indigestion, red or irritated skin, inflammation, difficulty sleeping, excessive perfectionist tendencies, frustration, anger and impatience. Through the wisdom of Ayurveda we have the power to keep our minds and bodies balanced all year long allowing us to enjoy the sunshine!

Journey into the world of Ayurveda and heal through your senses with Nancy Rich, ERYT-500, graduate of the California College of Ayurveda as an Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist. Enjoy a blissful, Pitta pacifying half-day retreat filled with Ayurvedic education, including diet and herbs, aromatherapy and other sense therapy practices. Surrender into a slow, chilled out yoga asana practice (physical practice) with wisdom that you can take into ALL of your yoga classes, pranayama (breath practice), Yoga Nidra, nourishing food, a cooling elixir, and other delightfully treats to take home.

Ayurveda is a complete medical science that is derived from the same teachings as yoga and aimed at healing imbalances with the body & mind.

Please dress in cozy layers and bring along your yoga mat, pillow, journal.

Pricing: $145 per person (10% off for members)

Yin Yoga

Friday, July 21st

7:00-8:15pm

with Martha Flanagan

Are you moving too fast?
Doing too many things at one time?
Too much "mind chatter" or just want to slow down?
Yin yoga can provide an antidote for this.

This class will guide you through a series of poses that are primarily done sitting and lying down. The poses are held for 2-5 minutes at a time to allow connective tissues (fascia, ligaments) to soften, lengthen and lubricate. A yin yoga practice compliments a yang practice and allows for a more balanced approach to life.
